In 2019, Lufthansa Industry Solutions (LHIND) initiated a project in cooperation with Lufthansa and the caterer LSG Sky Chefs in which each meal tray was visually recorded after the meal on board and fed into a database.
This "computer vision" technique is a field of artificial intelligence (AI) that enables computers to derive meaningful information from digital images and other visual inputs and make recommendations based on that information.
Based on the captured meal tray data, a before-and-after analysis of all menu components was possible, allowing more accurate predictions for in-flight catering production and delivery in the medium term, which in turn will help reduce food and packaging waste.
The tool can also be used across industries for canteens and restaurants.
